We’ve all been stunned by the shuttering of so many local businesses due to Covid-19. For my latest project, I documented small businesses around Los Angeles that survived the initial shutdown against the odds, pivoting in new ways to stay afloat. Some have navigated the confusing PPP process; others have inspired GoFundMe accounts funded by loyal customers; and sadly, a few have closed in the months since I visited. I created several of these images for the August 2020 issue of Los Angeles Magazine, and I hope the exposure helps them to thrive.
After spending last year photographing mom and pop shops in Highland Park for my series #iamsmallbusiness, I realize just how important these small businesses are to our communities.
